Free short-term testing

A real monitor, placed by us, for free.

Not a mail-in kit. We place a professional continuous radon monitor in your home for 2 to 7 days, collect it, and explain the result in plain language — at no cost and with no obligation.

The short-term test

Two to seven days. Ten minutes to a first reading.

Our short-term test uses a continuous radon monitor (CRM) — the same class of instrument professionals use — not a charcoal canister.

  • Deployed for at least 2 and up to 7 days
  • Placement is simple: anywhere out of reach, typically the basement
  • Instant reading displayed in about 10 minutes; full result within 24 hours of pickup
  • Best done in fall or winter with windows and doors closed — accuracy drops when the house is open
  • We walk you through the number against the Health Canada guideline

91 days

Long-term testing, when the number is borderline.

If your short-term result sits near the guideline, we recommend a long-term test before anyone decides on mitigation. Health Canada is explicit that a long-term result should be the basis for that decision.

  • Runs 91 days, between September and April — the months with the least air moving through the home
  • Captures the whole heating season, when levels peak
  • A simple detector left in place, then sent to the lab
  • We go through the result and the options with you

When to test

Fall and winter are the right time — and November is Radon Action Month.

A closed-up, heated house gives the most accurate reading, so fall through early spring is the right window to test.

Reading your result

What the number means.

Health Canada says act above 200 Bq/m³. The WHO reference level is 100. Below the guideline we tell you so and you keep your money; above it, we explain which system suits your house before anyone talks about a quote.

  1. 1Book the free test. Two minutes online or one phone call. We call you back to set a time that suits you.
  2. 2We place a monitor. A continuous radon monitor goes on the lowest lived-in level of the home, usually the basement, for 2 to 7 days.
  3. 3You get the number. An instant reading in about 10 minutes, and your result about 24 hours after we collect the monitor.
  4. 4Fix it, if it needs fixing. If the level warrants it, we install a system — most in a single day — then retest to prove it worked.

Questions

About the tests.

Is the short-term test really free?

Yes. We place a professional continuous radon monitor in your home for two to seven days, collect it, and give you the result — at no cost and with no obligation. If your number comes back low, that is the end of it. We would rather you know your number than not.

How long does a test take?

The free short-term test uses a continuous monitor that sits on the lowest lived-in level of the house for two to seven days. It gives a first reading in about ten minutes and a result within about 24 hours of pickup. A long-term test runs 91 days between September and April, and Health Canada is clear that a long-term result is what a mitigation decision should be based on.

What level is too high?

Health Canada's action level is 200 becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³), and the World Health Organization's reference level is 100. There is no threshold below which radon is known to be harmless — the risk falls as the level falls — so the guideline is a point for action, not a line between safe and unsafe.

When is the best time of year to test?

Fall and winter. A closed-up, heated house has the strongest pressure difference pulling soil gas in and the least fresh air diluting it, so that is when levels peak and when a reading is most representative. November is Radon Action Month in Canada for exactly this reason.
